THE FACULTY OF AGRICULTURAL AND FORESTRY SCIENCES UPMS SUCCESSFULLY ADVANCES HIGHER EDUCATION COLLABORATION ACROSS THE GLOBAL SOUTH

The Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS), in collaboration with Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU), India, and the Konsortium Universiti Universitas Borneo (KUUB), successfully organised the regional forum Innovation and Challenges in Higher Education 2025, Perspectives from the Global South on 17 November 2025. The event brought together over 100 academics and students from Malaysia, India, and Indonesia for a meaningful discussion on the evolving landscape of higher education in the region.

The forum featured contributions from four distinguished speakers representing the diversity of the Global South. Professor Shahrul Razid Sarbini opened the session with an examination of comparative policy analysis and regional cooperation, highlighting the importance of shared progress across borders. This was followed by Professor Manjula Jain of India, who reflected on the transformative potential of India’s National Education Policy 2020 and its implications for global competitiveness. Dr. Irman Irawan of Indonesia added a compelling perspective on bridging knowledge and society through inclusive innovation, while Dr. Nor Azura Hj Abdullah from Brunei discussed the delicate task of sustaining a balanced innovation ecosystem within higher education institutions.

In her closing remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noorasmah Saupi, Dean of the Faculty, underscored that true advancement in higher education is shaped by people and their willingness to collaborate, adapt, and innovate. She emphasised that solutions must be rooted in local realities yet open to global opportunities, and that forums such as this play a vital role in fostering shared understanding and strengthening cross-institutional ties.

The forum recorded a total participation of 101 attendees, comprising academic staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, and support staff. With representation from Malaysia, India, and Indonesia, the turnout reflected a strong regional interest in addressing the challenges and opportunities that define higher education today.

UPMS extends its gratitude to TMU and KUUB for their partnership, to all speakers for their insightful contributions, and to the participants who enriched the discourse with their engagement. Special appreciation is conveyed to Dr. Neha Anand of TMU, and Dr. Keeren Sundara Rajoo and Dr. Ameyra Binti Aman Zuki of UPMS for their commitment and coordination in making this forum a success. UPMS looks forward to deepening these collaborations and continuing to advance meaningful dialogue on the future of higher education across the Global South.
